Tempres Wiggins: The Power of Determination in Education… and Life

It’s been said that the difference between success and failure is simply getting up one more time. And, Compton Village Apartments resident Tempres Wiggins continues to live by that philosophy, even after life has thrown her a series of curveballs.

When her daughter was born, and had to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Tempres quickly abandoned both her education and career aspirations. But only temporarily. She never gave up on her dream of furthering her education and a career in psychology.

So, she enrolled in online classes to obtain her GED. However, when her son was born, she once again got sidetracked while caring for two demanding babies.

Tempres, however, is no quitter.

After several attempts to complete the credits needed to receive her high school diploma, she learned about Leon N. Weiner Education Foundation’s (LNWEF) scholarships for online high school. The program supported by LNWEF, administered through Career Online High School (COHS), provides tuition to students (16 and older) who are eager to earn their high school diploma.

At the urging of LNWEF staff, she applied, was accepted, and enrolled. And, while caring for two energetic young children, she was finally able to receive her high school diploma.

Unlike in-person classes, the online option with the flexibility to structure a study schedule around her family’s needs, helped ensure her success.

But Tempres wasn’t done yet.

After graduating, she toyed with the idea of applying to Delaware Technical Community College (DTCC). She knew that a college education would help her support her family, as well as serve as a positive role model for her children.

In theory, she knew this was the next, logical step. But she was uncertain of her ability to juggle the conflicting demands of college with what was most important… her family. So, Tempres would take one step towards applying…and then take a step back. This process repeated for weeks. The LNWEF administration and Compton Village Apartments’ property manager continued their encouragement. This was echoed by her family, especially her sister, who has always been a loyal supporter of her educational goals.

After taking the plunge and submitting her DTCC application, her resilience and determination were rewarded. She was accepted!

Today, Tempres is a busy college student and mom. Her packed schedule includes classes such as the DTCC 1st Year Seminar and English Composition, homework assignments, term papers, and projects, plus caring for her young family. The hectic schedule is worth it. As a Human Services major, these classes move Tempres one step closer to her ultimate goal of a career in psychology, working to improve mental health and focusing on children.

Her best advice to anyone in a similar situation? Keep the faith. Stay motivated. Surround yourself with the type of people who are positive and motivate you. And never give up.
